Since natural diamonds were discovered in Botswana in 1967, it has become home to two major mines. Jwaneng and Orapa diamonds contribute to the country’s economy and help support local entrepreneurship and business growth.

Rough diamonds arrived along Namibia’s coast 40 million years ago via the Orange River. Today, these marine deposits are the richest known in the world and help shape Namibia’s economy.

Since the discovery of the Cullinan diamond, South Africa’s diamond sector has played a central role in driving economic development, generating national revenue and creating employment opportunities for more than 100 years.

Diamonds were first found in the rivers of Sierra Leone in the 1930s, with commercial mining operations established in the early 20th century on the successful implementation of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme.  Sierra Leone produces some exceptional diamonds, including large, rare type IIa gems.    Most diamonds are recovered from small alluvial mine sites operated by miners from local communities; these diamonds can help contribute directly to the livelihoods of these communities.
